A citadel above the Mediterranean

Dalt Vila is the fortified old town of Eivissa (Ibiza Town), Spain, crowning a hill above the harbour. Founded by Phoenician settlers in 654 BC and encircled by Renaissance-era walls with seven bastions, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 for its exceptional military architecture and roughly 2,700 years of continuous history.

One of the best-preserved coastal fortresses in the Mediterranean, its whitewashed houses, cobbled lanes and Gothic cathedral tell the story of Phoenicians, Romans, Moors and Catalans. The upper town invites you to wander slowly, look up at the bell tower and out across the harbour to the sea.

UNESCO describes the upper town as “more than 2,500 years old” (World Heritage List No. 417); counted from the Phoenician foundation in 654 BC, that is roughly 2,700 years of continuous history.
